RA Power Solutions Pvt. Ltd. was called by a shipping company based in Indonesia reporting the failure of crank pins of Hyundai 1.8 MW diesel engine. Our technicians were deputed with portable crankshaft grinding machine designed and manufactured by us.

On arrival of our technicians it was observed that all the 6 CR pins of Hyundai engine were badly damaged due to failure of lubricating oil pump. The initial inspection of crank pins was conducted comprising of calibration for taper and ovality. Hardness test, crack detection by MPI and deflection checks were also done and recorded.

RA Power Solutions Pvt. Ltd. was successful in executing the on site crankshaft grinding of 6 nos. CR pins in short time of 72 hours. This achievement was possible because of the excellent design of onsite crankshaft grinding machine was developed and manufactured by RA Power solutions in house engineers. A pneumatic turbine with high capacity and latest design was used which helped technicians to execute the repairs in short duration.

RA Power Solutions has executed successfully grinding of 6 pins on board a vessel at Dumai/Lubuk Gaung Port, Indonesia of MAN B&W STX 6L23/30H.Engine

In this case, crankshaft grinding was required because all the CR pins having standard diameter of 185 mm developed taper and ovality. Out of 6 CR pins not even a single pin was seized  or crack was developed.

The above observations shows that the engine users should periodically get the crankshaft calibrated and go for grinding and polishing as crankshaft develops taper and ovality due to continuous running.

Inspection of Turbine Shaft

Considering the continuous running and severe working condition of turbines it is advisable to conduct periodic inspection of turbine shaft. Following is recommended:

  • Inspection of turbine shaft bearing seating diameter for taper and ovality. This should be recorded.
  • Due to corrosion and fatigue cracks, it is recommended to undertake crack detection check preferably by magnetic particle test (MPI) or by dye penetrant test. This should be essentially undertaken by qualified technician.
  • Hardness Test – The hardness on the bearing seating area should be checked.
  • It is important that the turbine shaft bearing seating diameter is free of any bearing line marks, pitting, corrosion, etc and has the surface finish as per the international norms. This can be checked and surface finish can be improved by polishing the bearing seating area.

The periodic inspection of turbine shaft is necessary. It is common to observe bearing line marks, corrosion, fatigue cracks, taper and ovality on turbine shaft bearing seating area In case these defects are not attended on time it can result to the failure of turbine shaft and damage to other parts.

Special pneumatically driven grinding equipment is used to undertake the grinding of the turbine shaft. The turbine shaft grinding equipment is portable, light weighted and easy to carry to the site. The experienced engineers undertake the grinding of damaged bearing seating area of the turbine shaft and maintain the tolerances within 20-30 microns with high surface finish.
