Instructions for using on site crankshaft and cylindrical Grinding Machine:-

Inspection:

  • Check CR Pin Size, Hardness, DP Test, or Magnetic Particle Test and
  • Deflection, in case all reports are good after that, take Second Step.
  • Dismantle the machine and check all spare parts, assemble the Pneumatic Motor in insitu grinding machine.
  • Assemble the hardware in the shell and assemble the machine on the crank pin and rotate gear manually.
  • Assemble the machine upper and lower cap and recheck all bolts.
  • Connect Air Hose Pipe to Pneumatic Motor.
  • After machining process first round is complete, dismantle the in situ grinding machine and check size of Crank Pin.
  • Follow same step to complete job.
  • Before maintaining final size, check hardness, MPI or DP Test & take Maximum Reading by Micrometer.

Note: Before final size check, reset outside micrometer and take dimension again.

It is important that the crankshaft is initially inspected by experienced technicians in order to detect the fault after the damage or accident.

The following are the major parameters that are examined before the repair of the crankshaft:

  • Minimum and maximum diameter of the crankpin and main journal, taper, and ovality is checked.
  • Run out of main journals and deflection readings are taken to verify the loss of alignment.
  • A complete non-destructive test using MPI and ultraviolet lamp for heat cracks is undertaken of crankpins and the main journal of the crankshaft.
  • The crankshaft is also subject to a hardness test.

Based on the preliminary inspection reports prepared by the technicians the repair procedure is planned. The onsite crankshaft grinding machine used for the crankshaft repair is lightweight and is placed on the damaged crank pin from the inspection window of the engine block. There is no requirement of removing the crankshaft from the Entablature and send it to the workshop as bench-type grinders are now outdated.

The crankshaft grinding and crankshaft polishing is undertaken to maintain taper and ovality, surface finish as per the OEMs requirement. RA Power Solutions have facilities to undertake in situ crankshaft grinding, crankshaft polishing, and repair of crankshaft up to the diameter of 700 mm without removing the crankshaft from the engine block.

Crankshaft Grinding Executed on Board a Vessel – RA Power Solutions

RA Power Solutions has executed successfully the crankshaft grinding of 6 pins on board a vessel at Dumai/Lubuk Gaung Port, Indonesia of MAN B&W STX 6L23/30H Engine.

In this case, crankshaft grinding was required because all the CR pins having a standard diameter of 185 mm developed taper and ovality. Out of 6 CR pins, not even a single pin was seized or crack was developed.
