  1. Initial dimensional inspection of the crankpin is undertaken by calibrated measuring instruments for taper, ovality, and other parameters.
  2. The radius fillet, lubricating oil hole of crankpin, is checked for any loss of profile and damage.
  3. Crack detection test by high-intensity MPI torch is undertaken by level 3 qualified technicians.
  4. Hardness check and other important parameters are checked and recorded.

After the initial inspection, in case required grinding and polishing of the crankpin is undertaken, to maintain the tolerances strictly as per the manufacturer’s specifications.

The following are the major parameters that are examined before the repair of the crankshaft:

  • The minimum and maximum diameter of the crankpin and main journal, taper, and ovality are checked.
  • Run out of main journals and deflection readings are taken to verify the loss of alignment.
  • A complete non-destructive test using MPI and ultraviolet lamp for heat cracks is undertaken of crankpins and the main journal of the crankshaft.
  • The crankshaft is also subject to a hardness test.

Based on the preliminary inspection reports prepared by the technicians, the repair procedure is planned. The onsite crankshaft grinding machine used for the crankshaft repair is lightweight and is placed on the damaged crank pin from the inspection window of the engine block. There is no requirement to remove the crankshaft from the Entablature and send it to the workshop, as bench-type grinders are now outdated.

The crankshaft grinding and crankshaft polishing are undertaken to maintain taper and ovality, surface finish as per the OEM requirement. RA Power Solutions Pvt. Ltd. was called by a shipping company based in Indonesia reporting the failure of crank pins of Hyundai 1.8 MW diesel engine. Our technicians were deputed with portable crankshaft grinding machine designed and manufactured by us.

On arrival of our technicians it was observed that all the 6 CR pins of Hyundai engine were badly damaged due to failure of lubricating oil pump. The initial inspection of crank pins was conducted comprising of calibration for taper and ovality. Hardness test, crack detection by MPI and deflection checks were also done and recorded.
