RA Power Solutions has undertaken reconditioning of crankshaft exceeding ten thousand numbers and recommends the following situation for reconditioning of the crankshaft.

Recommendation for reconditioning of Crankshaft:

I) It is recommended to undertake crankshaft repair in case taper and ovality exceed the limit specified in the maintenance manual of the engine manufacturer.
II)  In case of an accident, deep line marks or depression are developed.
III) Reconditioning of the crankshaft is recommended in case higher hardness is observed due to the seizer of bearings or any other reason.
IV) Development of surface crack.
V) Loss of alignment.
VI) In certain cases, although the dimensions of the CR Pin and Main Journal are observed within the limit, due to the rough surface observed on the CR Pin and of the Main Journal, the surface requires polishing.

Quality of a Re-Machined Pin or Journal

The quality of a pin or journal after machining has to meet the following requirements:

  • Geometrical tolerance in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  • A blueing check has to be carried out on the re-machining surface. Blueing Shells: Min. Width is equivalent to Journal or Crankpin dimensions, respectively. Min. Length is equivalent to 1/5 of the Journal or crank-pin circumference.
  • Required contact area: Min 35% equally distributed over width and circumferences.
  • Free of hairline cracks: Journal or crank pin to be tested by means of Magnetic Particle crack detection method.
  • Free of Martensite: The microstructure is to be tested for edged areas of martensite structure will replicas or micro etching with 5% nitric acid in alcohol (Nital) applied to the pin after polishing.
  • The maximum admissible hardness of remaining local hardsports: However, such local hardsports are not tolerated around the fillets and the bores for lubrication.
