Considering the continuous running and severe working conditions of turbines, it is advisable to conduct periodic inspections of turbine shafts. The following is recommended:
- Inspection of the turbine shaft bearing seating diameter for taper and ovality. This should be recorded.
- Due to corrosion and fatigue cracks, it is recommended to undertake a crack detection check, preferably by magnetic particle test (MPI) or by dye penetrant test. A qualified technician should essentially undertake this.
- Hardness Test – The hardness of the bearing seating area should be checked.
- It is essential that the turbine shaft bearing seating diameter is free of bearing line marks, pitting, corrosion, and other defects, and has a surface finish under international norms. This can be checked, and the surface finish can be improved by polishing the bearing seating area.
